The Amherst Human Rights Commission’s primary purpose is to promote a community of mutual respect and to honor the diversity of our community. We strive to promote attitudes of compassion and concern for our neighbors. To encourage these values in Amherst, we have initiated the Human Rights Youth Heroism Awards, an annual celebration of Amherst area youth. 2023 represents the seventeenth year of these awards! It is the Commission’s intent to identify and celebrate youth who have shown a special gift from the heart or an ability to love and care for one another. We are looking for young people who have demonstrated acts of kindness, usefulness, social courage and/or community service within their families, their schools, or the community. Please help us by nominating a youth you have observed displaying one or more of these traits in the past year. Youth groups may also be nominated to share an award.

The Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion presents: Being an Ally, not a Savior. Join Jana as she facilitates answers to: What is the role of the white ally to Black and BIPOC communities? How can you shed the cape of savior to become the warrior ally?

Anchored by Howells’ magnificent Requiem, Illuminati Vocal Arts Ensemble’s final concert of the season explores the music of British and American composers who sought a new approach to their craft through the study of earlier periods and/or folk traditions, as well as two fresh voices who have entered the choral canon from unexpected directions. Featuring haunting melodies and pure, shimmering tones, this is music best heard in person; the choral sound on which we’ve built our reputation.
