Health Applications
Working cooperatively within the Inspection Services Department, a team of Public Health and Inspection professionals are responsible for protecting the public’s health, disease control and prevention, as well as promoting sanitary living conditions to ensure the maximum quality of life for residents and visitors in the Town of Amherst.
In conjunction with the Board of Health, Inspection Services issues a variety of permits and licenses pertaining to public health and safety. The licenses and permits range from food and tobacco licenses to recreational camp and septic system permits. Any fees associated with a license or permit is due with your application and are payable by check to The Town of Amherst.

Health Licenses are annual and must be renewed before January 1 of each calendar year.

In Massachusetts, licensed recreational camps for children must be inspected by the local Board of Health in the city or town in which the camp is located. In order to be licensed, the camp must meet all regulatory standards established by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) and any additional local requirements.

The Amherst General By-law, Animal Welfare: Section 8, requires some property owners to register an application with the Inspectional Services Department outlining any intention to keep livestock and/or poultry on your property. Applications will be reviewed and an inspection of the premise will be completed by the Animal Wellness Officer before any permit can be issued. A complete application including a $10.00 registration fee should be submitted to the Amherst Inspectional Services Department.

Q. Does the Town of Amherst license camps?
Yes, your child's camp should have a permit issued by the Town of Amherst. A Health Agent inspects each camp to ensure compliance with the state code put forth by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.
Q. How does a food establishment obtain or renew a food permit?
Renewal packets are mailed to food establishments approximately two months before the expiration date. All application forms are also available on the Inspection Services web page. Anyone considering opening a new establishment in Amherst should schedule an appointment with a Health Inspector to discuss the requirements of the licensing process.
Q. Why are failing septic systems harmful?
Inadequately treated wastewater can transfer diseases such as dysentery, hepatitis, and typhoid fever to animals and humans. Failing systems also leak excessive nutrients and bacteria to ponds, rivers and lakes destroying plant and animal habitat and closing beaches.
Q. How do I know if my system is having problems?
You could notice any of these clues:
Muddy soil or pools of wastewater around your septic tank or soil absorption system.
Sewage smells around your system or inside your house.
Backups when you do laundry, take showers, or flush the toilet.
Q. I am selling my home. Do I need a Title V inspection?
Yes, a Title V inspection is generally required when a property is sold, divided or combined.
