Bicycle and Pedestrian Network Plan

The TAC has worked with the Pioneer Valley Planning Commission (PVPC) to develop the Amherst Bicycle and Pedestrian Network Plan. This is intended to guide the town as it implements a complete streets network, specifically to improve the transportation network for cyclists and pedestrians. It also addresses the bicycling and pedestrian needs presented in the 2010 Amherst Master Plan and the 2015 Amherst Transportation Plan, and makes recommendations consistent with the strategies presented therein.

Crosswalk Design Standards

The Amherst Transportation Advisory Committee (TAC) has been tasked to evaluate and establish crosswalk design standards that will encourage safety, accessibility and consistency. This need was identified in the Transportation Plan (2015) and specifically requested by Town officials. Documents regarding these design standards can be found by following the links below.  The TAC will be receiving comments about this topic until December 12th, 2018. Email any comments to TAC@amherstma.gov with the Subject: Comment on Crosswalk Design Standards or mail to: Amherst DPW, 586 S. Pleasant Street, Amherst, MA 01002 Attn: Crosswalk Design Standards.

Complete Streets Policy

Complete Streets Policy

The Transportation Advisory Committee has drafted a Complete Streets Policy for the Town of Amherst. The TAC would like your input, as friends and neighbors, in creating this Town policy to implement Massachusetts' Complete Streets program. The TAC will be creating a final draft for the Select Board's consideration February 28th, 2018. Please email comments about this policy to TAC@amherstma.gov.

This draft of the policy meets all the criteria to be eligible for receiving funds as set out in the State's program and is in accord with the Community Compact approved by the Select Board in April last year. It is intended to guide the design of Amherst's transportation networks in the future.

The Policy draft can be found HERE.

Complete Streets Program

The TAC has advised that the Town of Amherst participate in the Complete Streets program, a MassDOT funded initiative.

"A Complete Street is one that provides safe and accessible options for all travel modes - walking, biking, transit and vehicles – for people of all ages and abilities.

Designing streets with these principles contributes toward the safety, health, economic viability and quality of life in a community by improving the pedestrian and vehicular environments. Providing safer, more accessible and comfortable means of travel between home, school, work, recreation and retail destinations helps promote more livable communities."
