The Amherst Police Department has partnered with the Medic Alert Foundation in an effort to protect community members with Alzheimer’s disease, dementia or autism who are at a risk for wandering. The hope is that family members will use Medic Alert as part of their safety plan, and as a result provide any public safety agency with real time information should a loved one go missing. Medic Alert is providing a free data base as well as a free medical identification bracelet or necklace to people who enroll. The worn jewelry will provide a unique identification number and contact information that can be used at any time of the day or night to help reunite the wanderer with his/her family or caregiver.
For registration information, please contact the SALT Liaison Officer Jessica Damon via email at damonj@amherstma.gov or for additional information regarding this nationwide program at www.medicalert.org/leap.
